Playing With HSTs

Several quilts are at a standstill due to the need for either backing fabric or border fabric!!! So, itching to sew this weekend, I went digging through my vast collection of 5" charm squares and started chain-piecing half square triangles with the goal of a baby quilt for DH's niece and her hubby, who have been waiting a lo-o-ong time to adopt a baby. They are slowly inching up the list and we are so hopeful that by June they will have that precious bundle! I pulled from the the Moda's Oh Baby! packet. The colors are so yummy, but there won't be enough for a whole quilt so I will mix in several others. I have become so addicted to the 5" charm squares that I almost hate to cut into them! They are so darn cute all lined up in a container! Add to that the year-long swap my mini-group did last year with 5" squares--I have a few!!! It is so relaxing to sit at the machine and chain-piece. I could do it for hours!!! I am thinking the Broken Dishes pattern will be cute. The bottom photo is the Jo's Scrappy Stars I have been working on for ages--and you are probably sick of seeing it!!! I decided to stick with the scrappy look and just use more of Jo's fabric for the setting squares. I did have to fill in with 3 or 4 fabrics that are not Jo's but I am certain my DS won't know the difference LOL! This week I will take it with me to a couple of quilt shops and search for the perfect border fabs and some extra-wide backing fabs. Anyone know a great online source for the extra-wides?

Your HST are so cute...love that baby fabric. Your Jo's Scrappy Stars is just beautiful. Can't wait to see what border you pick. I have a Civil War brown piece by Judie Rothermel/Marcus Brothers in the shop that is 108" wide. It is the brown from the Charleston collection. I can send you a swatch if you want.

I agree - chain piecing can be so fun - mindlessly stitching up tons of great blocks.
Your Scrappy Stars looks great - never get tired of it *s*

I'm with you - chain piecing half square triangles it so relaxing because it's such a no brainer. The broken dishes blocks in those colors look marvelous! Perfect baby quilt.

I absolutely don't get tired of seeing the Scrappy Stars - the perfect type of quilt in my opinion. I really like the setting with the alternate scrappy squares.

I know there is a website/store that has ads all over the place. Have seen them in quilting magazines but dang if I can't find them now.

I love your HSTs. I agree with you though. It is tough to use nickel charm squares, but sometimes you just have to use them.

Nice start to the baby quilt. I love those soft colors together.

They both look great but I love the scrappy stars. I have several similar patterns put aside for when I make one of these quilts - one day.

Is there anything more fun? Who would believe the number of different patterns you can get from something so simple as HST's... and thanks for the coeliac advice on my blog, it's not that, but I appreciate all assistance. Tracey

I found a pretty good selection of wide backings at Keepsake Quilting--you might try them. I wasn't specifically looking for repro fabrics though. Love your Jo's stars--I was lucky enough to take two of her classes last week! I'm becoming addicted to charms too--I love to pull out a couple packets and challenge myself to make something with them.

You have about convinced me to use my charms on hst and see what develops. It seems as much as I 'hate' doing them, I've done quite a few lately. Love the Jo's scrappy stars.
