The Bad Week

Sometimes it seems that the world is "out to get you", doesn't it? Sunday afternoon my hard drive crashed. And, of course, not every single file was backed up, though most pictures had been put on CDs. The computer is only 1 1/2 years old--fortunately, we had purchased the 4-year extended warranty. So it was not as horrible as it could have been. However....big however....dealing with the tech support people at Nameless Computer Company was indescribably frustrating and maddening. After many hours on the phone with them--to no resolution--we finally brought in a dear friend who does tech support for a living. He finally demanded to speak to a supervisor who reluctantly agreed to send us a new hard drive. Sometimes I think warranties are best used to line a bird cage. Anyhoo, computer is back up and running. Of course, I am minus some applications that were preloaded on the computer and Nameless Computer Company only sent some of the install disks (grrrrr.....) but eventually that will be worked out. My computer woes became totally irrelevant Monday night. My nephew was the victim of a violent crime. He is okay physically, but he and his two friends who were held at gunpoint and robbed will live with the mental images for a long, long time. I won't go in to detail (you never know who lurks in Blogland) but suffice it to say, we are grateful he is alive and we're not the least bit upset about the computer anymore. The perpetrators were caught, thank God, but what lies ahead will be nightmarish, I'm sure.

On to quilty things.... I had purchased the Shangri-la jellyroll on my trip and was anxious to put it to use! I ordered some 5" plaid squares and some luscious border yardage from fatquartershop.com in the Shangri-la coordinates. I already had the book, On A Roll, and really liked the cover quilt called "Cotton Candy". Got all the 5" squares trimmed back to 4 3/4" and was ready to dive in. Or so I thought. It seems one needs the Easy Angle tool for cutting some of the pieces!!!! After looking through my gazillion rulers, I learned that I do not have that particular one.
A trip to the quilt shop will be in order for this afternoon. I need some cream fabric for block backgrounds and setting triangles anyway....sigh.

Oh my - not a fun week at all. Glad to hear that your nephew was not physically harmed and the perp(s) have been apprehended . . . that is a good first step to helping fix some of the mental images.
Looks like you are going to have a lot of fun with your new fabrics. Yummy!

Oh so sorry to hear the news about your nephew. Sorry about the computer too, but your right - taht seems so silly compared to your nephew. I love the jelly roll, and what a hardship to go to the quilt store! You'll love that ruler!

Glad to read your nephew and his friends were not harmed physically. I hope they will get help dealing the mental stress.

It is good your friend was able to install a new hard drive. He maybe able to install the old drive as a slave and try to read the file and applications you are missing. I got lucky many times and was able to do this for clients.

When it rains it pours - doesn't it? I'm so sorry to hear about your nephew and thank God that he wasn't hurt physically. Sadly, he will have that image in his mind for a very long time. My DH was held up at gun point almost 30 years ago and still remembers every tiny detail.

Enjoy your new project!

Hope your nephew is starting to recover after what happened.
At least some good finally came of having the extended warranty, although you had to go to a lot of trouble to get a result!
Love that pattern and fabric.
Take care:)

Hi Vera, so happy to hear your nephew is ok after the close call. Anything like that is too close for comfort! And happy to hear you sort of have your computer problems resolved. SOmetimes it's good to be able to say "all well that ends well".
Love the candle mat!!! Hugs, Finn

I am so sorry for your computer troubles. Not being a techy myself, I know how frustrating this is. I am more sorry, though, about your nephew. Some true creeps in the world, huh. My son's roommate was attacked and his nose and jaw broken...all for a school kids backpack. Just doesn't make sense to me. Enjoy your new fabric!

So sorry to hear about your nephews horrible experience - as annoying as computer troubles are when you hear about something like that it does put your own woes into perspective - new fabrics look scrumptious

Well, when it rains, it pours. I hope your nephew has a relaxing hobby to work his problems out with. Quilting does this for me; I talk to myself about my problems.

I love your plan for the quilt! I'm glad your computer is at least up and running. My best friend's hard drive lasted 30 days, and she got no argument. Ours lasted 18 months, like yours, and we bought our own replacement, since we didn't go with the 4 year extension.

I'm so sorry to hear about your nephew's holdup. It's awful to feel so helpless, and I'm glad that they were caught, though you are probably right in thinking this will drag on a long while.
